ROMAN AND BYZANTINE COINS

Koinon of Bithynia. Hadrian, 117-138. Tetrassarion (Bronze, 33mm, 25.72g 6). AYT KAIC TPAI AΔPIANOC CЄBA Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Hadrian to right. Rev. BЄIΘYNIAC / KOINON Octastyle temple on a podium and two steps; within the central intercolumniation, pellet; above, in the pediment, male figure (the emperor?) sacrificing over low altar to left, and with a pellet in the pedimental angles to left and right; on the roof, three acroteria: to left, Athena in a chariot to right; to right, Nike in a chariot to right; above, at the center, uncertain figure in a facing chariot. BMC 12 var. (different bust type and reverse legend differently arranged). SNG Copenhagen 324 var. SNG von Aulock 284 var. An impressive piece with a dark patina. Minor scratch on Hadrian's neck and slightly porous surfaces, otherwise, good very fine.
